Agilezorb mitigates the risk of TBI

Agilezorb can help protect our warfighters from the first few microseconds of an IED's shock front.

Military Applications:

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

Many soldiers are suffering from traumatic brain injury due to overpressure and other non-penetration effects. A thin layer of Agilezorb integrated into existing helmets can help protect our warfighters from mechanisms believed to cause brain injury in the first few microseconds of the blast.

TBI estimates for service members returning from Southwest Asia combat areas indicate 15-20% minimum to 50-60% maximum or combat troops are affected

TBI is believed to be caused in part by mechanisms during the first few microseconds of a blast when pressure in the shock front rises from 15 pounds per square inch to 15,000 pounds of pressure per square inch (1 to 1,000 atmospheres). While the exact causes of TBI are not fully understood, smoothening and lowering the shock front during the first few microseconds of a blast is believed necessary for TBI mitigation.

Agilezorb is believed to be the only material which reacts fast enough in compression to smoothen and lower the leading edge of the shock front, converting the shock front into to a smoothly rising, non-shock wave.

Conventional energy absorbing materials, which offer no protection until their cells begin crushing, allow the shock front to enter the body. The accompanying figure shows gas gun test results demonstrating that Agilezorb can indeed smoothen and lower the shock front.

Military Applications:

Body Armor

Agilezorb was originally developed for use in body armor. When used in a thin layer behind conventional armor or shear thickening liquid, Agilezorb can absorb a substantial percentage of the impact energy before it enters the chest, abdomen, knees or elbows.
